DB rolled up for our second game of the season against Tropics and the squad on paper looked full of attacking options. With 33 degree hit and high humidity, the subs bench was going to get a workout. DB absorbed some early long ball raids with a new centre back pairing of Matija and Dan doing a solid job and the attacking minded midfield of Matt, LT and Crommy quickly started to dominate. With neither keeper tested early on it seemed it was going to be a battle of fitness for the midfielders and DB were coming out on top. After the 1/2hr mark a couple of subs were made and the high pressing line nearly paid off. Some great balls between Thanos, Crommy and Matty led to Eathen burning his defender for pace and in on goal for a 1v1. Some great keeping kept him out and DB set up camp in the Tropics half for the rest of the half. 3 consecutive corners saw Matty H nearly bury a great header but the ball sailed just over. Half time came around very quickly and the boys needed every bit of rehydration and sugar to keep the legs going for the second half. A rejigged line up and position changes seemed to slow the momentum of DB in the second half and the slick 1 touch passing went missing. The long balls returned for the defense line and there were a few close saves from our number 1 in goals. A few nice runs from eathan, Thanos and Enzo looked to break the game open but DB couldn’t find the finish. With 10 to go Gabe was collected from a late and heavy challenge which resulted in a red card to Tropics. However DB couldn’t capitalize and whilst dominated possession and opportunities, couldn’t close it out. The game finished 0-0 in what was a hot and humid afternoon in Happy Valley. With a quality ball playing squad, the goals look to be just around the corner.
