It took most of the game to wear down KCC but 3 goals in the last 10 minutes gave us a comfortable win. On the narrow pitch 2, we set up as a 4-4-2 with the intention of getting some quicker ball to Andy and Resco up top. It was a feisty start to the game with Thierry and their big “88” striker making acquaintance in the first minute. It was a fairly even game for the first 20 minutes. KCC were quite physical and a number challenges from behind went unpunished by a very weak ref. It soon became clear that the main threat from KCC was their “88” striker with his runs into the channels but our midfield worked well to limit the supply to him. Andy reaped reward for a lot of tenacious running up front with a good strike from the edge of the area to put us 1-0 up after 20 minutes. Shortly after he was unlucky with a shot that hit the crossbar. We went into HT at 1-0 and started our rotations with Jo coming on at RM and Ben and David at FBs. The first part of the second half was again relatively even but the final 20 minutes provided a goal fest. First, Arch who had come on as a target man faced up to his defender, took a touch to his right and hit low past the keeper to make it 2-0. We thought we were home and dry but we let KCC back in it with a simple tap in after Newley had parried their striker’s shot. But then the game opened up and KCC left big spaces in midfield for us to run into and give possession to Andy and Arch. Both scored in quick succession with well worked strikes after good team possession: Arch after a one-two with Andy, and Andy after a move compared by OB with Brazil’s 4th against Italy in 1970. Finally, Ben moved forward in support from RB and shot from just inside the area to complete a very decent performance by all.
