DBFC Vets 6 -2 FWD Seniors FC

DBFC continued their impressive charge for the league title with a difficult win over FWD Seniors FC (not as the score line suggests).

After thumping FWD 8-0 in their meeting at the beginning of the season, DBFC arrived at KGV relaxed in expecting another easy win. However, this was to be far from the reality of the night as FWD fielded a completely different set of players, a number of which were recognised to have been players in the FWD/Hamsap legal league team some seasons back.

DBFC started well but force the play a little too much and lost possession relatively easily, especially to the FWD’s strong midfield. DBFC did settle down and started passing the ball more accurately and not forcing long balls. It was good passing down the right side that got to Moti Nahmias, about 20 yards back from the corner flag and, and he sent over a long-driven cross to the far post that Rafael Lopes, having blazed past the FWD right back, met to tap in. 1-0 DBFC

FWD were still having their fair share of the game and the DBFC defense were working hard to contain them. It was at about 20 minutes that FWD midfield pressed and DBFC did not effectively clear the ball for it to come back a number of times to be crossed from the right and a FWD forward to slot it in and make the score 1-1.

At 25 minutes, Sam went on for Moti and Nick D went on for Kieran and shortly after DBFC second goal arrived when Nick Dunn played a defense splitting through ball from the right for Paul Crompton to run onto in the FWD 18-yard box and shoot over the out rushing FWD keeper into the roof of the net. 2-1 DBFC.

The game was still back and forwards but it was DBFC that got the next goal when Dirk cleared long to find Paul Crompton who controlled the ball and played out to Rafael Lopes on the left to see him skip inside past a FWD midfielder and send a superb curling shot towards the far post of FWD’s goal that went in at the top corner off the post. A goal of the season contender to put DBFC Vets 3-1 up at half time.

Gazza went on at half time for Dirk and Crommy had the shits so disappeared for 10 as Moti came back on. The game followed the pattern of the first half with both teams with equal possession, although FWD were pressing more forward to try and get goals back. Some desperate defending and Alessio was needed a number of times, especially dealing with crosses into the box from corners and free kicks with quality punching, kept FWD at bay. However, DB rode their luck on several occasions, first Gazza making a miraculous goal-line clearance facing the net and somehow twisting his body like a Russian gymnast to flick the near certain dink over the keeper off the line and round the post …. would never be able to do that again in 100 chances!!! Then FWD called for a what looked like a penalty as Matija kicked their player in the face, but thankfully the ref gave a free-lick on the edge of the box.

After holding FDW at bay, it was a counter attack that got DBFC’s 4th goal when Matija Maretic took the ball out of the back to the halfway line and put a pass inside the FWD right back for Moti Nahmias to collect and run in at FWD goal from the left to rifle in a shot across the keeper just inside the far post to Make it 4-1 to DBFC Vets. This seemed to spur FWD to attack more in search of a goal and they got it when awarded a free kick on their left side to float into the box for their big men. Alessio came out to punch clear but his call was too late for Matija who rose to head away only to collide with Alessio. The ball dropped in the thick of the amassed players and an FWD forward toe poked the ball over the line to make the score 4-2.

Alessio had to go off having suffered a bang to his jaw and Matija, feeling a little guilty, pulled on the Goal keeper shirt for the last 10 minutes and Stefano dropped back to CB. FWD now push players forward looking for more goals but in doing left themselves vulnerable to DBFC counter attacks.

DBFC’s 5th goal by Sam Riley was from a counter attack when Morse popped the ball down the line for Moti Nahmias to turbo charge down the left and fire in a low cross to the near post that Sam met with his well-timed run to flick the ball in the FWD goal in front of their keeper. Another counter attack resulted in a ball into the box being adjudged to have hit the FWD defenders hand and a penalty awarded. Up steps Crommy and fires a low drive about 3-foot-wide of the FWD goal post (less said about it the better). DBFC Vets had not finished there and again the DBFC defense foils a FWD attack to pass the ball out to Rafa at the halfway line who passes inside to Sam Riley in the centre circle who slots a nice curled pass from the outside of his boot through FWD back line for the rocket propelled Moti Nahmias to collect and drive a low shot past the FWD keeper into the corner of the goal. The game finished 6-2.

MOM: Stefano for working tirelessly in the middle of the park breaking up the FWD play and setting forward DBFC. It was a good Captain’s performance.

DOD: this was a tossup between the no show Martin Rigby with the excuse “Fccc I forgot” or Paul Crompton for badly missing a penalty when no pressure in the game whatsoever. The committee has decided unanimously that this award goes to Paul Crompton who is now DBFC Vets ex penalty taker.
