The DB+45s season hit top gear at Sports Road with a deserved win against HKFC’s premier social side who beat us 6-0 and 8-2 last season. Due to the DB Vets league game the night before, the Manager had called on Club Tropicana Vets Paul “Pony” Ryding, Kevin Reid and James Manning to give us a bit of help; and Snelly thought a senior vets game would be a good opportunity to make his comeback after a year out with a serious knee injury. We started the game confidently but, as is often the case at Sports Road, Dynamics had more and better possession. With less than 10 minutes on the clock, they took their first chance – their striker not being closed down quickly enough, passing the ball between CB and RB and providing their runner with a simple finish. However DB stayed strong, well marshalled at the back by Pony and we soon got back into the game – a cross from the right by Snell met by a towering header by James. At this point Dynamics knew they were in a game and we were closing them down in all areas of the pitch, not least Matija in a newly created “attacking defender” role. We made our first 2 changes at 25 with OB on for Kevin at LB and Hymnsey for Scottie at RM. And with barely his first touch, Hymnsey powerfully headed (nosed) past the keeper after a cross from the right by Fouad. We were playing well at this point and went further ahead just before half-time after an inch perfect toe-punt from Matija was met by Kieran (still buzzing from scoring 5 against the USRC senior vets team on Friday) who lobbed it over the keeper from the edge of the area. HT 3-1 and Gazz/ Scottie/ Michel/ Kevin on for Steve/ Fouad/ Snell/ Matija. Dynamics had their best spell for the first 15 minutes of the second half and got more possession in midfield – but we let them back into the game cheaply with 2 soft goals – the first from a cross come shot that tricked Alessio, and the second after we failed to clear our lines. Dynamics were now playing with confidence and were back in it. We made our final changes with Matija back on for Thierry who had to dash for a flight and Fouad back on for Kieran. Fouad at this stage was on a mission – several penetrating runs into the heart of the Dynamics defence, helped by some selfless supporting runs from Scottie. And with 10 minutes to go, Fouad hit another worldie as he cut back in from the left on to this right foot and unleashed from outside the area. We stood firm for the final minutes of the game and congratulated ourselves on an outstanding performance and result. Several of us adjourned to the bar and were kindly hosted by Dynamics; Fouad disappeared off to register for Barry Brown’s soccer school, where the promise is of 1000 touches in one hour without upsetting anyone. MOM – lots of contenders for this: big thanks to our Tropics guests for helping us over the line and particular thanks to those of you (Thierry, Scottie, Gazz) who did a double shift after Monday’s game.
