Another high scoring game against Mr. Koon’s team of ex and one or two current pros. A couple of days before the game we only had 9 confirmed to arrive for the early KO but we ended up with a large squad that included 10 players who were either guests (mostly Thierry’s) or new signings as well as Thierry, Kieran C and Steve who had just arrived in HK on the day of the game. Before the game, Mr. Koon presented us with a pennant to commemorate his new “Wing Yee Football Centre”, showing the warm ties between his club and DBFC. We didn’t have a GK for this fixture so Pierre Olivier and Jorg kindly agreed to share the GK duties. Again, we agreed a no offside rule for the game which partly explains the high scoring nature of the fixture with the opposition adapting better than us to the use of a player whose role is to move behind our back 4. For the first quarter, we matched the opposition well. Nik put us 1 up with a nice finish from outside the box but they equalized soon after with our back 4 making a couple of mistakes trying to play out of defence. On the half hour, they went 2-1 up with another mistake that led to their player lobbing our GK who was off his line. The second two quarters provided more end to end action. Pierre Olivier went to Number 9 and provided a master class in finishing with 3 well taken goals. We were always in the game and never more than 2 behind but we inevitably lost a bit of shape with our continuous rotation policy in an effort to give a squad of 16 adequate game time.
