This game was billed as a must win for DBFC Vets if they were to remain within reach to challenge HKFC Vets at the top of the Legend League table.

DBFC Vets had a very strong squad available, with 2 new signings making their debut (Matija and Moti). Everyone arrived early and eager for this game and Dirk made Gazza manager for the night so that he could give 100% to his on-field football. Gaz named Kieran D as Team Captain and Kieran immediately got the lads into some good warm up routines. Gaz gave the team talk, laying out his plan to stifle HKFC bursts from midfield by playing a holding midfielder (Morse) and asking for 100% effort and focus from all players. The starting line-up was announced: Alessio (keeper), Kieran and Matija (CBs), Dirk (RB), Danny L (LB), Morse (HM), Pascal and Warren (CM), Moti (LM), Sam (RM) and Paul (CF), subs: Oscar, Steve W, Snelly and Scott. The intension was to keep swapping the wing players Moti and Sam with Oscar and Snelly every 20 mins so that they could keep flat-out running and intensity at the HKFC full backs.

DBFC got off to a great start, closing down quickly and putting in some strong tackles; every DBFC player was up for this win even the lads on the sideline with continuous encouraging calls. The game was going end to end but DBFC had the better of the chances and after 20 minutes they got a deserved goal from the boot of Paul Crompton. Paul should have had a second goal soon after when a great passing move sent Moti flying down the left wing to put in a cross that Paul connected with first time for a strong shot towards the corner of the HKFC goal, only to see the HKFC keeper pull off a full stretch great save. So DBFC only managed to go in at half time at 1-0 up.

The second have started with DBFC showing the same intensity and HKFC on the back foot trying to raise their game to wrestle the edge off DBFC. After 15 minutes of play DBFC went through 15 minutes of disorganization with players operating out of position and structure. HKFC capitalized on this with an equalizer. Alessio had made a string of great saves before that goal and continued after. Gazza called for subs: Steve W came on at CB and pushed Matija to holding midfield (Morse needed to rest after running his socks off); Dirk also came off on empty and Sam went in at RB to try and cope with the HKFC speedy winger; Scott went up front and Paul C dropped a bit deeper. This change and the fact all DBFC players were annoyed with giving away a goal, spurred the team back into action and the game went end to end. HKFC nearly got a second from a looped cross that came off the far post back into Alessio’s hands. DBFC were making plenty of their own scoring chances but not converting. The nearest was a fantastic shot from Warren from outside HKFC 18 yard box that curled and came off the inside of the post and horizontal across the face of the goal. The DBFC pressure paid off and with less than 10 minutes to go we got a corner that Moti took with a wicked in-swinger that somehow found its way into the HKFC goal net through a mass of players. DBFC 2-1 up and held firm to take the win.

Many of the DBFC Team stayed for some well-deserved beer at HKFC and to gloat on their victory.
