DBFC Vets 6 Godfathers 1

KGV – 9pm KO, Monday 3rd October,

Squad: Alessio, Dirk, Steve W, Zin, Morse, Warren, Bo, Fela, Snelly, Kieran M, Pat D, Gazza, Baz, Oisin, Stefano, Oscar

A good turnout for our 2nd game of the season against our local rivals, Godfathers, with 16 selected, 3 left out unfortunately, and Gianluca volunteering to take on the manager’s duties, which he enjoys so much, so he keeps telling me and Gaz.

Dirk and Gianluca did the team talk after a very laid back warm up, and decided on a 4-4-1-1 formation, looking to press when we didn’t have the ball, and stretch and keep possession when we did have it. Dirk, Bo, Gazza, Pat D and Oscar started on the bench.

First 20, it was obvious that the team talk had been a waste of time, as we continued to be sloppy in possession, trying to force balls, playing narrow and allowing Godfathers time on the ball … basically opposite of what we said. In all honesty, Godfathers were having the better of the first quarter, so changes were made, with subs coming on and the game plan / instructions firmly repeated.

The substitutions made an instant impact, at least in holding possession, but Godfathers still looked dangerous on the break when a number of times the ball was lost in the attacking quarter (after good build up play from the back) because of poor first touches and decision-making.

It was going to take a moment of brilliance to break the deadlock for either side and it came in the form of Zin hitting a beauty of a lob over the keeper from 40 yards out. DB celebrated but we also knew we needed to play a lot better.

The remainder of the 1st half continued to be frustrating with DB having greater possession and more chances, but Godfathers still were in the game. Half-time came and it was time to regroup.

Team tactics were reiterated and the same team from the end of the 1st half started the 2nd. The aim was to get an early goal and kill this game off. 5 minutes in, a lovely interchange on the right saw Dirk take the ball, look up and drive a killer curving pass past the outstretched legs of three defenders plum into Fela’s path. His first touch was a shocker, but he recovered to slide the ball under the advancing keeper. Good job, otherwise he’d have been subbed.

Now 2-0, and with Godfather’s tiring, DB turned up the heat, and looked to capitalise. I’m not sure what order but goals came from a close range effort from Snelly, a long range drive and shot from Stefano, a tenacious effort from Pat and a pile-driver from Morse that would have taken someone’s head off if they’d been in the way.

During this seemingly one-sided 2nd half, Godfathers refused to throw in the towel, and scored a consolation from ex-DBFC player Kwanu.

Job well done, although we made it hard for ourselves from the get go.

Final score 6-1.
