Off with a bang in our first league match of the 2016 / 2017 Season!

One late drop out and no take up by players put on stand-by left DBFC with a squad of 14, which was welcomed by stand-in manager Gazza (Dirk away, Baz at birthday party and Gianluca flying) as he had less subs to keep happy. Having played BTDT 4 times previous in successive seasons, Gazza knew their game plan. Defend deep in numbers and try counter attack. DBFC have been caught out by this tactic in two of those previous matches and ended with a loss and a draw against a much inferior team. So Gazza was going to start with 3 at the back (Zin, Riggers and Morse) 2 holding midfielders (Bo and Stefano) two attacking midfielders (Oscar and Paul) supporting Nick up front, with two wide midfielders (Jeff and Rainer) with instructions to keep wide and take it around the back and for the front men to time the late runs into the box. DBFC were not to get in the box too early and allow BTDT to congest the area. Gazza made Morse Captain for the night and Gazza, Steve and KC starting on the bench.

Well the tactics went out of the window, especially the bit about staying wide and DBFC pushed forward in total dominance as BTDT parked their team bus in their own penalty area. DBFC were getting into the box every couple of minutes but just couldn’t find a clear path through the dozens of legs in the way. Multiple DBFC shots cannoned into bodies and passes through just not enough space for on running players. We started playing into BTDT game by putting lots of players in their box. We should have scored from two fantastic Oscar corners that Stefano and Riggers just missed connecting. Both Cromp and Oscar were bobbing and weaving in front of BTDT’s 18 yard box but they just couldn’t find space to release shots. Bo and Stefano worked well in the middle picking up loose balls coming back from BTDT’s half and the occasions it did come through then the back three of Martin, Zin and Morse were there. There was only one scare when some fortunate ricochets resulted in BTDT working forward and their player in our box in front of goal. A great last minute tackle by recover Stefano blocked the BTDT players shot (I’m sure Alessio had it covered). KC came on for Jeff at wide left after 25 minutes.  Anyhow, it was when 10 minutes left of the first half, Cromp got the ball wide on our right and drove in a cross-cum-shot to BTDT’s far post and it went straight in the top corner —- classic! The score remained DBFC 1-0 up at half time.

At half time, Gazza advised DBFC were reverting to the usual 4 at the back (mainly because 113 years of Steve and Gaz were to enter the arena) and rearranged the team accordingly. Rainer was stripping his boots, advising that he needed to go back to work. Bo and Nick came off with instructions to come back on after 20 minutes. The rearranged format saw Steve and Riggers CB, Gazza RB, Kieran LB, Stefano and Morse CM, Cromp LM and Oscar RM with Jeff and Zin up top.   Gazza repeated the need to play very wide to get round the back of BTDT.

The second half was the same story of full control and dominance by DBFC. Cromp and Oscar on the flanks was working a treat and balls were going into the BTDT box left, right and centre but unfortunately a way through the mass BTDT defence could not be found. Actually the 4 at the back played into DBFC favour because with only two in midfield BTDT were getting a bit more time on the ball and playing it forward to their striker looking for an equaliser. This occasional possession by BTDT encouraged more of their players to venture forward and leave a little more room in the BTDT defence. DBFC had so many chances the manager was losing count. And BTDT were desperately defending. In fact it looked harder to miss some of the chances than it would have been to score. However, the tireless work rate by Jeff paid dividends when he got the ball on the right of the 18 yard box and put in a low driven cross to the far post. It went through a couple of BTDT defenders, somehow missed a toe-in from 3 oncoming DBFC players and skidded under the keepers hands in to the goal. DBFC were flying now at 2-0 up. Nick came back on for Zin up top and Bo came on in CM to push Morse on the right and Oscar to take a break. DBFC pushed for another goal but it just didn’t come. DBFC end 2-0 winners but were thinking that it could have been a lot more.

MOM: some great performances by many but the manager’s choice is Stefano for a great work rate all over the field.
