Another week, another early kick off. In the end we got a solid team together, but we had to pull a lot of strings with people working etc., and it was a relief on Friday when we were sure to get a good squad.

Preparations for the game weren’t the best, with Matt Orr nursing a massive hangover, long term memory loss and strange cuts on his elbow; whilst our Irish striker had enjoyed St Patrick ’s Day a little too much and simply looked a mess.

Kieran D led the warm up and manager Gaz gave the team talk, with the focus being on keeping the ball and getting it out wide.

The first half kicked off and it was a relatively even game. DBFC weren’t able to get any space in the middle on such a small pitch, and at times we weren’t helping ourselves by overplaying and getting robbed of possession. Rubies had a few chances, whilst DBFC got one or two clear chances from a corner, but overall the 1st half was pretty even, with DB’s attacks faltering as soon as we put a long ball over the top. Darius came on for Scotty Holmes, whilst Dan Keenan replaced the injured Jordan Roberts.

The first half ended with Rubies missing a one on one, and DBFC happy to get to half time with the scores level. Matt Zoeller came off to sober up.

The second half started better with Matt Orr, now playing in the middle, pulling the strings. As we were keeping the ball better in the midfield, we weren’t under nearly as much pressure as we were in the first half. Soon the first goal arrived when Ben put a great ball over the top for Darius to be one on one with the keeper. Darius slightly miss-hit his volley, which seemed to put the keeper off his stride, and the ball trickled in.

Rubies responded to going a goal down with a spell of pressure on the DBFC goal, with an exquisite tackle from David and a well taken yellow card both rescuing the day.

The second goal came soon after, Ben dribbling down the line couldn’t figure out where to pass the ball so, 35 yards out, he decided to have a go and shoot. The ball rocketed into the top corner. Matt Orr looked beside himself with misery as he came to the realization that he was going to lose his ‘who would score more goals this season’ bet with Ben.

By this time Matt Z was beginning to see straight again, and manager Gaz allowed him to come back on.

And soon the third goal came when DBFC broke and were 3 v 2. We looked to have messed it up, with a classic Zoeller misplaced pass… luckily Matt Orr got on the end of it and did a lovely piece of skill to beat the keeper and score…. Or so he thought…. Millimeters from the goal line, Zoeller runs up and pokes it in.

Zoeller claimed after the game that it was the best goal he ever scorer, purely because he took it away from Matt O.

MOM – Benny Roberts – good defending, an assist and a wonder goal.

DOD – Matt Zoeller. He just wasn’t very good. Like the ‘e’ in his surname, it was pointless him being there in the first half. Absolutely thieved a goal from Matt Orr as well.

Although Matt Orr wasn’t exactly being a genius that day… we at DBFC are pretty sure our strip is white and purple….
