Our first league game of the season saw us come up against a side that we had beaten 3 times in the latter part of last season. However, it was clear from the outset that we would have to work hard to win this one. There was not much to choose between the sides for the first 20 minutes until a move of high quality down the right channel: Baz picked up the ball at RW just inside their half and chipped down the line to Kieran, whose cross to the far post was met by Simon with a decisive header. KCC did not create any clear chances thanks to a strong defensive spine of Mac and Thierry in front of Pedro and Morse. However, just before the break Newley bailed us out with a save after their striker had a 1 on 1. We got to HT and felt that a second goal would Kill the game. We brought on Dirk, Jo and Kieran C for Ben, Baz and Steve B, the first of several rotations. Five minutes after the break we had a good spell of possession in our half, which ended by Pedro going long: Kieran C at RW picked up a loose ball and crossed to the far post for Simon to volley home with another great finish. Simon went close with another effort and then came off as part of our rotation of central midfielders. KCC had one glorious chance to get back into the game after a cross from LM dropped between our CBs but their striker shot tamely wide. Our CM continued to work energetically but not always appreciated by the referee. Thierry picked up a yellow card for a tackle from behind; and Mac and KCC88 saw red after exchanging a few pushes and shoves. In the context of what was a very keenly but fairly contested game, a “strong yellow’ would probably have been sufficient. However, given that KCC88 was their main threat up front, it was a reasonable trade and even enabled us to rotate Pedro at CB for some well deserved bench time. All in all a really good performance to start the league campaign.
