Another solid performance in game 9 of 10 in the 21-22 season that never ends. Not much at stake in this game other than a chance for a more respectable league position. SIA were last season’s league winners but are currently propping up the league. We decided to go with a 4-4-1-1, hoping that Pedro and Morse could maintain a higher line, with Kieran up top and Stephane operating in the gaps between midfield and attack. We started strongly with lots of possession and it was only a matter of time before we went 1 up: Newley’s throw to Steve at LB, long ball into the channel for Kieran, cross to the far post with Ricky connecting and Stephane finishing from two yards. On KGV’s big pitch, we knew there would be lots more opportunities to get behind their back 4, who were unable to cope with the mobility of our front players. Ricky from RM put another through ball behind their CBs for Kieran to run on to and score in a 1 on 1 with the keeper. Then Stephane scored from just outside the box with a low shot to Keeper’s right. We were cruising. SIA had some decent guys up top but lacked the service and our back 4 kept the door locked. We could have added to our tally in the first half with Kieran and Stephane both disappointed not to be claiming the match ball before HT. HT 3-0, at this stage Adam and Michel were on for Resco and Ricky and Dirik came on at LB for Steve. It is always difficult to control a game for 80 minutes and so it proved in the 2nd half. SIA pushed players further forward and started to pose a greater threat. We in turn got more careless with our possession and the good long ball became a hopeful one. We gave SIA brief hopes of a comeback after a pass along our 18 yard area was intercepted by their striker and converted to make it 3-1. At this point it was a much more even game and clear that any next goal would be crucial. But we kept cool heads for the last 20 and saw the game out. Solid all round with Kudos to those who played the full 80: Ben, Pedro, Morse, O’B, Baz and Kieran. And good luck to Kieran’s co-pilot this morning as he listens to Kieran’s analysis of the game on the way to Anchorage.
