This was DBFC Vets first game of the new 2022-23 Legends League season and they were looking for a good result to put a marker down on retaining the league title. The squad of 18 players were certainly of the quality to carry out this plan, however, the start of the game was slow and not the flowing football of last season with many players showing bad touches and rusty displays.

A couple of players didn’t make the game and a number turned up late so gaffer Gazza had to adjust his team plans and consequently team warm-up and talk were not so strongly directed. However, the boys in the starting line-up got straight into action, winning possession frequently and starting moves that just didn’t come through, an indication that many of the players were still finding their feet and touch after a long late summer break. BTDT didn’t present much of a threat and Riggers and Nin starting at CB with Pedro RB and Morse LB, stopped all advances. New recruit David Jordan playing at CF wasn’t quite finding the link up with the mid-field, as many passes and crosses were just not accurate enough. After a while the quality of our 3 CMs (Steve, Jonatan and San) and attacking LM and RM (Crommy and Tong) started to shine with some passages’ of play that did better link up and after 19 minutes Tong was played in onto the right of goal to selfishly turn a pass inside for DJ to bang into an open goal. The boys seemed to be flying at this point after and numerous chances were created but not converted. This flying feeling was short lived as DBFC’s pressing for a second goal led to a break-away by BTDT, which was stopped at our defence only for BTDT midfielder to pick up the loose ball 35 yards out from DBFC goal and smash a long high shot goal wards that dipped over Newley (GK) on his six-yard line and into the net. Whether this shot (on 23 minutes) was luck or skilful accuracy to drop over the 6 foot 3 inch DBFC keeper is open for debate but it was undoubtedly against the run of play. The shock stirred DBFC Vets and 6 minutes later (29 minutes played) DBFC got their second goal after bombardment on BTDT goal saw the ball being recycled and interplay between Crommy and Tong saw Crommy’s shot from the left side blocked by the BTDT Keeper and the rebound headed in from close range at the back post by DJ to make it 2-1.
At this point Pedro came off for Pui to take up the right back position and immediately the addition of pace on the right, to support Tong, was causing BTDT problems. On 24 minutes, Tong and Pui linked up at pace for Pui to drill a low cross into the BTDT six-yard box causing their own defender to turn the ball into his own net. The score was now 3-1 and provided the cushion DBFC was looking for to ease the pressure. The score-line stayed at 3-1 until half time.

At half-time Riggers came off for a break for Tita at CB and Gaffa Gazza reverted to a familiar 4-4-2 formation, pushing Crommy at no. 10 to closely support DJ. Jonatan came off to leave Steve and San CMs and Ben came on to take up the LM role. The direction was to keep pressing and more goals would come.
The second half continued with the pressing football that DBFC finished with in the first half and for 20 minutes of seeing numerous waves of good attacking football, DBFC Vets just couldn’t get the ball into the BTDT net. Then BTDT had a five-minute spell of attack in numbers on the DBFC goal and the ball wasn’t cleared effectively, so kept coming back into the DBFC goal area before going out to the right side where the BTDT winger came racing in and fired a bullet shot, from the narrowest of angles, that went over the head and hands of Newley to ricochet off the underside of the bar and into the DBFC goal. This made the score 3-2 for DBFC with 20 minutes left.

Gaffer Gazza made a couple of changes to introduce energy. Steve came off for Jonatan to go back on in CM and Tong came off for Emerson to go RM. DBFC picked up the pace again and had some great moves that just didn’t see the final pass or final shot to give another goal and breathing space. BTDT were getting tired, which allowed DBFC to press more but still the goal would not come. With 10 minutes left Riggers came back on at left back for Morse, DJ came off for Stephane at CF and Crommy came off for Tong to go RM and Emerson to move into the no. 10 position. These changes brought a little fresh energy and it wasn’t long before a great team move of passing, which started from the back along the right side, ended with Tong breaking free to the right bar-line and firing in a low cross for Stephane to turn into the BTDT goal on 75 minutes. DBFC Vets were happy to see out the last 5 minutes to take the win over a resilient BTDT team.

Well done the DBFC Boys; a good winning start to our season and hopefully all the cobwebs have been blown away.
