The traditional end of season Legends 8’s was held this past weekend with 6 teams entering the tournament – DBFC Vets, Spartans Masters (defending champions), Godfathers, BTDT, Shooters and Jubilee678.

The format was 1 group, 5 games, with the top two playing the Cup Final. Each game was 15 minutes straight.

DBFC had a relatively strong team considering it is the main holiday season, but we lacked a keeper. That was until Thursday night when Sascha offered his services. Game on!!!

Under the blistering heat, most of us craved for an early beer, but being as professional as we are, held off. It was at least 35 degrees on the pitch, and it was a good job we had 12 players for an 8-a-side ¾ pitch tournament.

First up in the group was Jubilee678, a local team of ex-pros and academy players. Tidy footballers, they kept possession and pinged the ball around nicely. However, with Dirk going with an attacking 2-3-1-1 formation, DBFC had the better chances and deservedly took the lead through a Kieran M poke into the corner from some lovely build-up work. However, luck turned against us as Jubilee whipped in a cross which Sascha called for, only for Pascal to try to clear. They collided, leaving our keeper floored with shoulder ligament damage, and out for the rest of the tournament. Kieran D duly stepped in goal, and with a couple of subs, DBFC lost a bit of shape and Jubilee had the better of possession. A needless foul led to a free kick which was superbly whipped in for their winger to nip in and guide the ball into our net. 1-1, and that’s how it remained at the final whistle. Not a bad result, but we felt we should have won … we should have killed off the game with a few more chances we had early on. 1 point.

Next up was Godfathers … our local rivals, who looked to have quite a decent squad. Neil volunteered to play keeper for the rest of the tournament – much appreciated. We stayed with the 2-3-1-1 format this time with Kieran D upfront, Pascal behind him and keeping the back two as Baz and Kieran D, with Bo holding. Wingers rotated between Warren, Dirk, Kieran C and Amin with Mike C coming on upfront. Stef ‘Ze German’ Godfathers keeper kept them in it as DBFC dominated possession and chances, but Godfathers had the potential to be dangerous on the break. However, DBFC were being left frustrated as we struggled to break through. Then, with a few minutes to go, lovely interchange on the right, a perfectly weighted pull back from Dirk, gave Mike C a chance. He drilled it, and Pascal got a flick to but it past the helpless keeper. 1-0 to DBFC and without much of a threat, DBFC got the deserved win. 4 points.

The 2-3-1-1 seemed to be working well, everyone clear on their roles. Next up was Spartans, the defending champions. DBFC kicked off from where they left off, controlling play and dominating possession. Spartans worked hard and carved open a few chances, but DBFC seemed on top, and it was DBFC who broke the deadlock just over half way through the game. Dirk receiving the ball from Kieran D, who cut inside and played a ball to Kieran M. A nice spin, leaving his marker, he was 1 on 1 with the keeper and buried it. 1-0. This soon became 2-0 with the same combination. A through ball down the wing, Dirk had acres of space. A chance to shoot, but with two teammates open, decided to cross for Kieran to fire past the keeper for his 2nd. Spartans heads had dropped a little, and DBFC saw out the game 2-0. A comfortable win, and now 7 points.

With so many draws in the other games, we knew we had a good chance to secure a top 2 spot, and BTDT were next. For the first time in the tournament, we looked like throwing it away with a couple of defensive errors, but our stand-in keeper came to our rescue with a couple of great saves. A fairly even game then changed and it was advantage DB, with a well taken goal by that man again, Kieran M. However, BTDT should have equalized. A cracking strike hit the underside of the bar, their striker only had to hit it but scuffed it and Neil saved. A let off and DBFC held on to guarantee at least 2nd spot, with Jubilee holding 1st, and blowing the rest of the teams away. 10 points.

With 2nd sown up, the final game against Shooters was more about giving those players on the bench more game time, and balancing game time and rest for the final. The same back 2 of baz and Kieran D, Pascal defensive cover to switch with Bo, Kieran C on the left, Dirk on the right, Warren attacking mid and Mike C up top. The game didn’t go to plan, and we were quickly down 2-0 with some poor decisions and lack of marking costing us dearly. A further mix up allowed Shooters to go 3 up and DB were reeling. A few changes and DB got one back with a great solo effort from Kieran M, but it was too little too late, and DB registered their first loss of the tournament.

However, with 10 points, we qualified 2nd and set up a cup final against Jubilee678, who were undefeated.

Again the same formation, with Neil in goal, Baz and Kieran D in defense, Bo holding, Warren on the right, Amin on the left, Pascal attacking, and Kieran M up front. DBFC started strongly, maintaining possession. The sun had gone so a little cooler for both teams but Jubilee seemed intent on soaking up the pressure and looking for a quick counter. Much of the game was played in Jubilee’s half, and DB creating a number of chances and half chances. DB seemed to have the upper hand, but couldn’t make it count. Dirk was on for Warren, and Mike had come on for Amin. Then, with 1 minute to play, a long ball found Jubilee’s winger, a wily ex-pro, who turned Baz inside out and hit a peach of a left foot strike, which glanced Kieran D’s head and hit the top corner, keeper stranded. DB were gutted …

One final fling of the dice. Manager’s call pushed Kieran D into attack, and on kick-off, 30 seconds to go, DB drove forward. The ball was passed to Dirk, who went forward, cut inside and saw Kieran D screaming for the ball. A perfectly weighted pass, Kieran controlled, one touch forward and a ‘toe poke or all toe pokes’ to bury the ball past the keeper and into the net. Last kick of the game literally, and 1-1 – a deserved equalizer and onto penalties. Best of 3 then sudden death.
