DBFC 3 v 1 Goodfellas

Venue: Po Kong village pitch 2

Date: Tuesday 18th October

K/O: 8:30pm

Scorers: Dom, Tom and MattZ

It was cold, wet and miserable…but enough about Ben Roberts, let’s talk about the game.

Due to the league not being able to secure a pitch for Saturday 15th October, this fixture was rescheduled for mid-week. With the first of the week’s two typhoons passing by Hong Kong on Tuesday, DB met second in the table Goodfellas on a wet and blustery evening. Fortunately, the heavy rains during the day had subsided a couple of hours before kick-off, which was enough to allow the pitch to drain (earlier reports were that the pitches were flooded). The rainy evening also meant for traffic / travelling problems and many of the DBFC arrived not long before kick-off.  After a rushed warm up and some wise words from Gazza, DB’s team was announced: Yanou (GK) Riggers and David (CB) Ben (RB) Simon (LB) Dom, DanL and DaveM (M) Captain Tom (10) Zol and Jordon (F). Bench: DanK, Morse, Jarrod and Reto.

With the treacherous conditions, the game was never going to be a classic. The first 10 minutes were frantic, with both teams finding it incredibly hard to play football. Goodfellas played with the strong wind in this first half and this proved a definite advantage as DBFC often struggled to get the ball out of their half. Consequently, Goodfellas settled into the game quicker and managed to get themselves ahead with a well taken goal. DB stayed patient playing against the wind, and were unlucky not to grab an equaliser before half time. JB and Matt had some good chances but couldn’t quite find a way through. A notable occurrence, not long after kick-off, was that Ben gave the ball away with his first touch and was visibly unhappy, losing his head over it. As the typhoon whipped up some nasty gusts across the field, Ben was experiencing his own typhoon; a typhoon of emotion.

The half time team talk from Gazza focused on us keeping it tight in midfield and not trying to play too much football in our own half. We would have the advantage of playing with the wind in the second half so patience was the key to getting goals and a win in this testing game.

DB started the second half brightly, creating several chances against a haphazard Goodfellas goalkeeper. After a serious of corners that Riggers couldn’t quite put home, Dom ghosted in to the back post to calmly side foot home after a delightful corner from Matty Zoeller; a well-deserved equaliser. DB kept the pressure up, with DanK and JB coming close to putting us ahead. The goal came from a well worked move, starting at the back and switching to JB who played Tom in about 20 yards from goal. Realising the goalkeeper had the agility of a sloth and the eyesight of Stevie Wonder, Tom rolled the ball vaguely near the corner to put DB 2-1 up. DB continued to press on and looked to kill the game, and Goodfellas never really threatened to get back into the game. DB’s dominance was rewarded late on when JB broke down the left and crossed for Zoeller to finish the game off. David came off with 20 minutes to go and Reto came on. With 15 minutes to go Morse came on at CB and Reto moved to RB and Ben came off. Dan K came on for Tom with 15 minutes left and Jarrod for DanL in the last 10 minutes. Another point of note was that Ben continued to bitch and moan his way through the second half, although he perked up momentarily when he broke forward and nearly scored with a low hard drive that the keeper parried. After abusing the side-line (Gazza and Morse) for most of the game and giving the linesman the benefit of his opinion, Ben’s wicked tongue turned to the skipper in telling him politely go and #### himself.

MOM – It was a tough game on a bouncy pitch with wind and rain so it was never going to be a day for the more cultured among us. Dom and DanL played brilliantly in the middle of the park and DanK was excellent when he came on. However, Riggers, with his no nonsense marshalling of the back line in tough conditions gets the award this week.
