This was DBFC’s second Champions League Cup game of this season and realistically the only trophy they have a chance to capture.
Friday night at 9pm kick-off is not the most popular of times but still DBFC Vets turned out a decent team, although with some new faces; Andrew in Goal, Pedro, Simon (just turned 35 and making his debut for the Vets team), Benoit and Kenny (who was just visiting HK). Maybe it was because of all the unfamiliar players that DBFC started the first 20 mins flat and static and consequently found themselves 2 – 0 down after two soft goals, the second of which was a quickly taken free kick when DBFC defence was walking around in a daze and the ball played unobstructed into the path of a USRC attacker in the DBFC 6 yard box.  After the first 20 minute shock, William came on at centre midfield to partner Pascal and instantly this combination showed great improvement to wrest control in the middle of the park. DBFC started firing on all cylinders and soon after Ariel got a goal back when he met a cross to the edge of the 18 yard box and volleyed a loopy shot over the USRC keeper’s head that sneaked in under the cross bar. Soon after Baz Brown was involved in some passing down the left flank to advance from his left back position and thread a great pass between the USRC defenders for Kieran to run onto and coolly slot the ball in at the far post. It wasn’t all DBFC as Andrew was very active making some good saves to stop USRC running away with the game. DBFC had done very well to recover with a 2-2 score at half time.
The second half started a lot better for DBFC and it seemed USRC reverted to long ball and head on over the top of DBFC back line, but the DBFC defence held strong and it was DBFC that pressed for further goals. The third goal soon came after some good football down the right side and Ariel to cross in for Pascal to run onto and catch the cross on the volley from the edge of the USRC 6 yard box to send the ball over the USRC keeper into the far corner. The fourth goal was something special and came with 15 minutes of the match, so effectively secured the DBFC win. Scotty Holmes, who had moved into a central attacker position from the left side following Angelo retiring exhausted, collected the ball at about 25 yards out from some good passing at the back and through the midfield and set off towards goal. He shuffled the ball and jinked through 3 USRC players creating space for a shot. The crowd cried out for him to shoot but Scott had other ideas and when the last defender moved in to block, Scott flicked the ball over his leg and ended in the USRC box one on one with their keeper. It was open goal to the left and open to the right but Mr. Holmes just ripped through the ball over the out-coming keeper and busts the roof of the net. The crowd, well maybe just Gazza, went wild. A good 4-2 win.

MOM: a number of shouts for this award but the final picks were; Andrew, making his debut in goal for DBFC Vets and pulled of some good saves at key times to keep DBFC in the game; William, who came on half way through the first half and changed the way the game was going; Scotty for running his socks off as usual and a surprise turn of Brazilian style to waltz with the ball and score a stunning goal. SCOTT HOLMES gets the shout!
