DBFC 0 – 0 San Pellegrinos (cup match)
San Pellegrinos win 4 – 3 on penalties
Saturday 8th December 2018 at Tin Shui Wai Sports Stadium with 18:00 kick-off
Squad: Ricky (GK), Bryn, Jack, Charlie, Matt Z (Captain), Scotty, Morse, Danny H, Josh, Pius, Kafi, Darius and Steve Lang.
MOM: Either Darius or Matt Zol but on game time with consistent performance it goes to Matt Z.
Numbers were very short for this week with lots of injuries and people working or away on jollies. Fortunately Matt Zol stepped up to help his true team in its time of need and both Steve Lang and Jack Brown made there season debuts for this season after been laid off with bad injuries, both wanting only a part game to start their come-back. The grass pitch at Tin Shui Wai was not good for football as it was bone dry, hard and extremely bumpy. The ball bobbled badly and the first touch bounced up making flowing passing on the floor impossible with the ball getting boot up I the air. The game to play was long over the top of the defenders but DBFC didn’t call for this tactic in the first half and persevered trying to pass the ball. The first half was even with half chances at both ends but probably DBFC having the better chances. Jack came off after 25 minutes worried about his ankle and Darrius on at right back.
In the second half Darius was pushed forward but at left midfield instead of his usual right side. Nevertheless, it was Darius that was making the difference for DBFC with his speed and directness in dribbling. DBFC started, mainly through Matt Z to send the ball over the top and Darius, Kafi and Pius were causing problems. Cup Ties are 35 minutes each way and after 10 minutes of the second half it was well and truly DBFC on top constantly getting ball into the San Pell box and being so unlucky not the score. Two of the many chances were a free kick by Zol, which hit the underside of the bar and a Pius header that evaded the keeper but blocked by a defender on the line. However DBFC couldn’t find a goal to put the game to bed and it went to the best from 5 penalties each. First up was Steve Lang who hit the underside of the bar to come back at him, San P scored, Charlie scored for DBFC, San P missed, Kafi hit the post full on to see it come back to him, San P scored, Matt Z scored, San P scored, Darius scored and San P last penalty to win came off the fingertips of Ricky into the net. DBFC disappointed as they were clearly the better football side and on a decent surface would sure of been comfortable winners but in the lottery of penalties DBFC didn’t have look and San Pells had more good penalty shots.
