DBFC struggled to get a side out again for this match and Gazza worked hard during the week to confirm 14 players, which included 3 new signings. David and his visitor from Scotland (Paul) arranged to leave Macau early (to the annoyance of their girlfriends) to make it to the game at 30 minutes before kick-off and were a little worse for wear. One of the 14 was Robbie Bacon but he didn’t turn up because of sickness. So we played with a squad of 13.
Right from kick-off DBFC were flat and definitely not fired up for the game. After only 2 minutes Alessio rolled the ball out to Vilius at right back but obvious miscommunication saw Vilius turn to walk away and by the time he readjusted at Alessio’s shout the Tropics forward darted in to intercept the ball and shoot into the DBFC goal. DBFC’s lethargic start continued and after 15 minutes sloppy passing and poor attempts to clear resulted in the tropics forward again being given a gift for a free shot on goal to make it 2-0 to Tropics. After 20 minutes DBFC got their act together and some good passing and movement give them the upper hand. Darius beat his man down the line and another on the by-line to pull the ball back for Syd to curl a shot into the far corner of the Tropics net. DBFC continued to press and a break down the left by Adrian saw a pass into Matt H who threaded a lovely pass through the Tropics back line for Syd to turn past the Tropics Centre-back at blistering pace and rifle a shot into the far corner to make the score 2-2 at half time.
At half time Gazza reminded all of the consequences of switching off and praised the spirit to fight back to level terms and finish in the ascendency. This in mind and recognising that Syd was having a stormer of a game up top Gazza asked that he play at Centre Back for 20 minutes to secure the back against the pace of tropics forwards and give David time to come to terms with his hang over. Vilius came off and Adrian moved to right back and Sahil on at left midfield.
The second half started well for DBFC and Syd was settling the defence. However, Gazza’s plan fell apart when Adrian came off injured, Vilius then came back on at right back, and soon after in a few minutes of lapse concentration, tropics scored another soft goal from a header at the near post.
In response Gazza reverted to pushing Syd back to CF and David coming back on for Vilius as DBFC went 3 at the back. DBFC started to press with some good fast passing. Syd was playing fantastic at threatening the Tropics goal and Matt H was having a stormer in midfield and it was him that got the equalizer for DBFC with 5 minutes left to play when he was brought down after dribbling past 2 Tropics players. He got up to take the free kick at about 20 yards out and sent the ball over the wall to dip into the corner of the Tropics net. It was a great goal and in the last few minutes could have snatched victory but to be fair so could Tropics with a few good chances on the DBFC goal.
DBFC showed great character in coming back twice in the game but have to question their defence in allowing 2 gifted goals and a soft third goal. Overall a draw was a good outcome for DBFC.
MOM: Matt H is contender for a great second half performance where he was involved in everything with a great work-rate and a sublime free kick. However, honour goes to Syd for his work-rate and flexibility (CF to CB to CF) and 2 great goals.
DOD: This goes to Robbie Bacon for not turning up without a word.
