Having accepted our oppositions late request to play this game on Monday evening, we turned up ready to take on the unbeaten league leaders following our win on Saturday against BTDT.

Robin was very clear with his pre match team talk, telling us to “keep it tight”, ensure that our wide players “tuck in and allow them to play out wide”, and “if we score one today, we may even beat these”. Reverse psychology at its motivational best!!

A tight start to the game, with both teams having extended periods of possession. The deadlock was broken by DB after five minutes, who scored one of the best goals the Legal League will see this year. The ball was played out from defence, through Joost in the middle of midfield, who played a pinpoint pass out to Andy on the left wing. One touch to control, and smashed it in off the bar from 25 yards. 1 – 0 to DB. Not only a great team goal, but the first goal French Dragons have conceded this season.

After their initial shock the opposition came into the game, with Alessio sweeping up brilliantly on a number of occasions to save certain goals. Tight game continued with limited chances until French Dragons equalised with a deflected shot off Dirk’s knee. 1 – 1. Undeterred Robin quickly changed the team, with Kevin coming on in right midfield. Within seconds of coming on, Pascal picked a brilliant pass through the channel which found Kevin, and with his first touch finished clinically. Of course Robin took all the glory with his inspired substitution but huge credit to Kevin and Pascal. Another great goal. 2 – 1 to DB.

At half time, Robin re-enforced his pre match team talk. The second half started with a flurry of yellow cards, following some ‘interesting challenges’ in the middle of the park. There was a danger this could have got out of hand, until Stuart put his ‘mark’ on their no. 13. Unsurprisingly they didn’t come back for any more after that. Stuart of course was yellow carded!!

Chances were limited to both sides, until another great move down the left by DB, led to Fouad crossing the ball for Pascal to score. 3 – 1 to DB with 20 minutes to go!! We expected French Dragons to throw the kitchen sink at us now, but we created 3 or 4 more excellent chances which would have put the game out of sight. Alessio continued his great form with a world class save, tipping the ball over the bar with 5 minutes to go. At the resulting corner he was smashed into the net by their big centre half, but kept the ball out successfully!! With two minutes to go we did concede a second goal, good finish, no chance for the keeper. 3 -2.

As the time passed 22:30, the KGV caretaker turned half the floodlights off, and the referee duly blew the final whistle. A fully deserved victory for DB, which saw us move above French Dragons to the TOP OF THE LEAGUE!!

A great performance by all involved. Difficult to pick out any individual, as everyone who was in the squad contributed to this impressive victory. Even though it was a Monday night, and work looming early on Tuesday morning we enjoyed the Star Ferry to Central, and then the DB Ferry back home, where the early morning celebrations continued in the Plaza!!
