Jingle bells – DB gels!

DBFC vets went into their last game of 2014 with only 14 players in the squad with Steve W and Duncan pulling out on the day due to injuries and sickness respectively. Knowing that anything less than a win would not secure 1st place in the league by Christmas, Robin knew he would have to fire up his troops early doors to get the team focused. An early team talk and a decent warm up by Baz, DB looked ready for battle.

Skipper Stuart was not available for selection for this Game. Robin had to think of a strategy and with the help from others (Dirk, Zin and Pascal) Robin decided on a 4-1-4-1 formation with debutants Zin and Jamie pairing up as CBs.  Robin starting the game playing holding midfield and debutant Dave Jessop playing lone striker, this was a new DB vets team.

A well organised HKFC started very strong and DB struggled for the first 20mins with their movement and passing, particularly crosses into the box. HKFC continued putting pressure on the DB’s defence knocking in some great crosses causing DB all sorts of problems in the air. At one point DB were lucky not to have conceded a penalty for calls for handball.

The first goal came from a great cross into the DB’s box, with Jamie leaping to clear the ball, but could only head the ball straight on to HKFC striker who headed in from close distance, 1-0 to HKFC.

At this stage, DBFC could have buried their heads and conceded the game, but this was not the case, and as I love about this squad of players, this only makes DB more determined to fight back and that we did with some great energy coming from Pascal and Philippe in the middle of the park. DB started to ask some questions of their own. A great 1-2 between Philippe and Pascal on the edge of HKFC box found Philippe striking a fantastic shot at goal which hit the net with some force, keeper had no chance, and unfortunately for DB the linesman put his flag up for offside which was clearly not the case, a great goal disallowed!

Baz, who was managing the side line for DB brilliantly, brought Alessio on for Dirk after 25 and he gave his usual 110% .

The bad decision by the ref by disallowing a great goal only spurred DB on and with some great play down the left (probably the only time we played down the left all game) the ball was knocked inside and then out to John M who found himself behind their right back and with another belter, John found the back of the net, a great goal … 1-1!

At the break, Andy C came off with a calf injury and could not continue, so Pat D swapped in for Andy and Robin swapped out for Baz. With all three subs now playing this left Dirk and Robin as the only 2 on the side-lines.

The second half started and DB kicked off with the ball being passed all the way back to our GK…not the best start, however, DB started to get a grip of the game with Baz playing in the holding role, DB seem to take control of the midfield. A bad tackle on Alessio about 5mins into the second half, ended Alessio’s involvement in the game. Thankfully he’s not seriously injured. Dirk went back on the pitch, just leaving Robin as only sub.

From this free kick, DB scored again, a great cross deep into the HKFC box, found Philippe at far post to head the ball in … 2-1 DB!

Dave J started to play deeper and by doing so helped out the midfield, he never seemed to stop running, Pat D was brilliant after coming on and Baz started to take control of the midfield, no sign of his ‘right foot left foot passing’ which has recently become part of Baz’s game! 😉

DB were looking in control, until a defensive lapse led to the ball being overrun and into the path of their ex-international striker in front of goals (25-30 yards out) who looked up and shot, finding the back of the net! 2-2 and all to play for!

This did not sway DB from battling for the ball and some great play down the right flank, a cross came into Pat, who managed to head the ball into the air towards their GK. Their GK called but didn’t move and Pat followed up with another header to score the winning goal! Nice one Pat, an assist and a goal…6 points for you pal!

One thing to mentioned, a tackle from Morse on Growler was s topic of conversation in the bar after. The HKFC guys agree with DB that there was no malice in the tackle, both players went for the ball, however Growler came of worst with a dislocated shoulder. Hope for a speedy recovery for Growler.

DB managed to hold out and win the game, 3-2 and now go into the Christmas break singing ……” We are top of the league; say we are top of the league”

Jamie W was awarded man of the match, he was fantastic throughout the game, well done mate!

Philippe and John M also got some votes for MoM. As did Dirk and Robin! 😉

As for the rest of the players, all put in 110% and I’m so happy to be part of this fantastic squad!

Merry Christmas lads!
